About the artist
The trained goldsmith Robert Mathys occupied during his academic years
at the art school
of Basel semesters in painting and structural formation. He deepened his
solid training in
various stays abroad. In South Africa, he discovered through George
Forman his talent
for the sculptural work. Even though different materials have run
through his hands, he
has always returned to bronze as the main medium for his work.
Besides numerous exhibitions - among others in Aarau and Zurich - he has
earned several
awards at international goldsmith conventions and competitions.
In 1994 Robert Mathys emigrated to Canada with his family, where he
lived until 1998.
During this time he received private clientele and showed his work at
major galleries in
Whistler B.C. and Vancouver.
Today, Robert Mathys - born in 1954 - lives and works in Aarau. The
variety of his work
- unique jewellery, bronze / silver sculptures and a one of a kind style
of paintings - is
based on fundamental settlements with various materials and a marked
feeling for
aesthetics.
Philosophy
"In my work I am free. I do not censor the effect of my works on
the observer with
explanations or titles."
